The Outrun explores the life of Rona, a young woman fresh out of rehab for alcoholism. She returns to her family home in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Her parents, now separated, live close by. Rona alternates staying with them, helps her father on the farm, and navigates her mother’s religious community. Told through a non-linear narrative, the story weaves between her present struggles and her past in London as a biology graduate student.
In flashbacks, we see Rona’s life in London. She finds freedom in clubbing and begins a serious relationship with her boyfriend, Daynin. However, her drinking spirals out of control, and alcoholism damages her relationships. Causing harm and eventually leading to Daynin leaving her. One night, Rona is attacked while drunk. This traumatic experience pushes her to seek help. She completes a 90-day rehab program and begins her journey to recovery.
