The Old Oak screening at BFF
The Old Oak is a drama film from 2023 by Ken Loach and written by Paul Laverty. It is a co-production between the United Kingdom, France and Belgium. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d’Or. The film screened in the UK on 29 September 2023 and was nominated for Outstanding British Film at the 77th British Academy Film Awards.
The Old Oak
The film is about the last remaining pub, The Old Oak, in a village in Northeast England. The village is experiencing a decline as the mines are closing down, leading people to leave the area. Due to the availability of cheap housing, the village has become an ideal location for Syrian refugees.
The Old Oak is not just a pub; it’s also the only public space left in the once-thriving mining community. The landlord, TJ Ballantyne (played by Dave Turner), is barely holding on to The Old Oak, and his situation becomes more precarious when the pub becomes a contested space after the arrival of Syrian refugees. TJ forms an unlikely friendship with a young Syrian named Yara (played by Ebla Mari), who is curious and carries a camera. The film explores whether these two communities can find a way to understand each other, delving into their vulnerabilities and aspirations.
