Exclusive screening of Shepherds
Mathyas (Félix-Antoine Duval) leaves his Montreal life. He changes from being a young advertising executive to becoming a shepherd in the South of France. But the harsh realities of the pastoral world force him to question his romantic vision of the profession. Elise (Solène Rigot), a civil servant, has abruptly quit her job. Her visit gives Mathyas’ quest a new direction. Together, they take care of a herd. Embarking on a journey towards a new way of life in the mountains. The film is partly based on Mathyas Lefebure’s experiences related in a 2006 novel.
Sheperds holds some stunning cinematography. With masses of sheep moving almost like a river, and the French Alps where the sheep summer. Duval and Rigot are attractive as young spirits seeking to escape hum-drum urban life. Violence and death are an essential part of the natural world. Nonetheless, Deraspe’s depictions of such things are respectful and even compassionate. Though the closing disclaimer that no animals were harmed still comes as a relief.
