Set in modern-day Toronto, the film is inspired by Goethe’s 1774 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. Werther (played by Douglas Booth) briefly stops in town to retrieve a statue before embarking on a European adventure. A chance meeting with Charlotte (Alison Pill) changes his plans.

Charlotte is an introverted book lover who cares for her siblings after the passing of their parents. She is responsible and serious, but Werther adds something new to her life: spontaneity and excitement. The two share meaningful moments that lead to undeniable chemistry. However, there’s one significant obstacle in Werther’s way. Charlotte has already agreed to marry Albert, a successful and likable lawyer admired by everyone, including Werther.

As Werther finds himself in increasingly humorous and awkward situations in his attempts to win Charlotte over, she begins questioning her engagement. Her friends (Amrit Kaur and Iris Apatow) encourage her to follow her heart, leading to an emotional journey of self-discovery. Will she choose stability and familiarity of Albert, or take a leap into the unknown with Werther?

With standout performances, José Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenço’s debut film breathes new life into Goethe’s dark, philosophical work, transforming it into a lively, heartfelt romantic comedy for today’s audiences. Young Werther captures the complexities of love, timing, and personal growth in a relatable, engaging way.
